Performance features of the GPC module
’Multimodal Calculation’
(Short description)

1. General

This tool offers the user the possibility to plan and to analyze shipments with all carriers concerning freight costs. Therefore no SAP document (e.g. order, delivery, shipment, purchase order) is necessary. The MMC covers all requirements relevant for shipment and freight for inbound and outbound shipments. Restrictions for MoT (measures/weights/volumes) and route definitions - especially for international transportation - are considered. This tool provides results with respect to all requests concerning:

  • what carrier is allowed (priority/freight cost/geography)
  • which type and number of MoT are required
  • which combination of shipment types is possible for a certain scenario (e.g. truck to seaport/sea transport from seaport to seaport/seaport to destination)

2. Master data/control
Shipment scenarios can be predefined specifically to user and transportation requirements (purchase/sales/transportation/freight purchase) by user group/freight mode. This means, the user receives by using the selection options of his user group all required data is proposed automatically by the system for planning and calculation purposes of  shipments. That means that the end-user does not have to have specific transportation knowledge to retrieve the final freight results and shipment planning information because the system can be pre-configured according to the customer needs.

The following settings are necessary in the system:

2.1 Route definition/determination
To determine the correct itinerary the tool uses the standard SAP route. However the determination of the route is controlled by the new GPC condition technique. For international transportation the following variants are possible:

     Door – to door
Door – to port with THC
     Preliminary leg/main leg/subsequent leg

2.2 Packing strategy
Predefined packing strategies in the system are used to determine the optimal compound of MoT per transportation mode (truck/rail/sea/barge/parcel service) and enables the user to confirm the quantities of a purchase order or a customer order. The system will then determine automatically the necessary MoT for the shipments.

2.3 Carrier selection
The process for finding out the appropriate carrier for a shipment is started if the route and the MoT are defined. This happens based on each shipment stage which means even if a shipment would contain multiple stages, the system would determine a carrier for each stage. Depending on the processing mode (batch/online) – a selection pop-up can be proposed to the user. The selection pocess can be based on the following methods:

  • Least cost freight
  • Priority
  • Percentage of freight cost volume

3. Process
GPC provides a separate transaction for this tool. The authorization control is contolled  SAP standard. User groups set up for each user are determined automatically and will provide all the default values on the entry dynpro for MMC.
The user has to define material, weights/volumes. Departure/destination data can be changed online.
After processing the execute button, all available carriers per shipment stage are displayed. Then it is up to the user to make the selection. The result of the total calculation is displayed on a list screen. All shipment scenarios are listed with freight costs. The freight values are shown in the predefined currency (converted). Whis also works for UoM.. I.e. the tool is applicable internationally and shows the according tax amounts if applicable per country.

4. International comparison
The tool offers the possibility to compare different inbound or outbound scenarios for various materials. E.g.:
 - Purchase of a material A of a vendor in China vs.
 - Purchase of a material A of a vendor in USA vs.
 - Purchase of a material A of a vendor in Brazil etc.

5. Integration in SAP standard transactions
GPC also provides this function in standard SAP transactions.
I.e. GPC provides the call of this transaction in the Standard SAP order or offer. That enables customer services to answer customer questions immediately concerning transportation options. Beyond that customer service can provide the exact freight cost for each transportation.
